Old herring factory, Tanera Mòr

The ruins of the former herring factory at the head of the harbour jetty are out of bounds due to their dangerous condition. The telephone box, though no longer working, is somewhat incongruously situated.

Loch Crocach

The boat mooring in the SW bay. The walk-in, from the parking near Rhicarn on the B869, is stunning and worth every uphill stride on the good track. (the fishing needed a wee breeze!)

Microbial Limestone

This red laminated rock is microbial algal limestone, which represents the oldest life form in Britain and Ireland. It was produced by microbes which grew in mats over the rock, fixing limestone and then growing over the earlier layers. The red colour is caused by staining from the overlying sandstones.
